Explore Chester's Historic Sights
Chester is a city steeped in history, and there are plenty of historic sights to explore with your family. Take a guided tour of the stunning Chester Cathedral, walk along the medieval city walls, or learn about Roman history at the Roman Amphitheatre. These sights are sure to fascinate and educate your family this Easter.
Walk along the City Walls
Chester's city walls are not only the oldest in Britain (some parts are almost 2000 years old!) but also the longest and the most complete. These are the only ancient defensive walls in Britain where you can still walk the complete circuit, which gives spectacular views of the city and a great insight into Chester's long and interesting history.
The city walls are a fantastic way to see the whole of Chester in one afternoon, and with several entry points, you can easily stop for a lunch break at one of the many local cafes and restaurants.
Learn about Chester's Roman History
The Roman Amphitheatre in Chester was the largest and one of the most unique in Britain, highlighting just how important Chester was in the Roman era.
There were actually two different ampitheatres built on this site. Similar to Pompeii's ampitheatre, the first provided access to the upper tiers of seats via stairs on the rear wall, and a shrine by its north entrance. The second included seat access via vaulted stairways.
Located in the city centre with plenty of cafes, shops and Grosvenor park nearby, you can easily visit these incredible Roman ruins on your Easter holiday.
Visit Beeston Castle
You don't have to travel into the city centre to see some fantastic history. Sitting on top of an impressive rocky crag high above the Cheshire plain, Beeston Castle is one of the most dramatic medieval castles in the country. From here you can see all the way from the Pennines to the Welsh mountains. With a long and rich history and an enchanting 40 acre woodland park, there's something for the whole family to enjoy. You'll even notice that you can see Beeston Castle from your luxury floating pod at Tattenhall Marina!
Why not head to Beeston Castle for a cracking Easter Adventure Quest? Every day of the school holidays, you can explore the castle for clues and challenges and discover traditional Easter games like egg rolling or the egg-and-spoon race. Find all the Easter eggs and you'll be rewarded with an adventurer's certificate and a tasty chocolate treat.
Explore the City Centre
Chester's unique beauty and vibrant atmosphere make it one of Britain's most popular places for an unforgettable Easter holiday.
The city's ancient history is still prevelant, influencing every inch of Chester, from its impressive city walls to its 1000 year old Cathedral with some of Europe's finest examples of medieval carvings.
